Torre Piloti

Genoa, Italy

Pilot's tower / Control tower

A tragic accident occurred in Genoa in 2013. While leaving the port, a container ship rammed the pilot tower, causing it to collapse. Architect Renzo Piano, together with the engineering firm Buro Milan, was awarded the contract to design a new pilot tower.

This replacement tower, over 60 meters high, is supported by four steel columns filled with concrete. The columns are connected by transverse steel tubes and braced by high-strength tension rods. Beneath a 30 x 30 meter roof is the glazed control room. A two-story service building extends from the base of the steel tower.

Material

HMR750 Tension Rod Systems

Thread sizes:

  • M16, M24, M42, M48, M56, M76, M85, M90 for stiffening the slender steel structure by means of cross bracing as well as diagonally and vertically running tension rods

guaranteed design load: up to 3154 kN

special components:

  • HMR750 turnbuckle, HMR750 cross coupler and HMR connection disc for the smallest bar diameter

HMR Compression Strut Systems

Thread sizes:

  • M42, M48, M56 with tube (CHS) diameters from 114.3 - 168.3 mm

HMR Corrosion Protection

  • Systems hot-dip galvanised to DIN EN ISO 1461 in accordance with corrosivity category C3H
  • Special HMR thread coating corresponding to hot-dip galvanising => high corrosion protection and durability of the systems
  • Furthermore: Painting of Tension Rods and Compression Struts in RAL shade 7035 (light grey) compliant to corrosion class C5 Very High for marine climate applied in-house by Haslinger Services
